About Charity Golf Tournaments

Every player on the team hits, the team picks the best shot, and everyone plays the next shot from there, all the way into the hole. It is the most common charity golf format because it is fast, friendly and fun for every skill level. Most charity scrambles are foursomes with a shotgun start, on-course contests, a raffle and an awards meal.
Every listing in this category is a golf tournament: a one-off event lasting a day or a few days, as opposed to a weekly league. Most are charity scrambles and fundraisers for schools, nonprofits and causes, along with amateur stroke play championships, member-guest events, corporate outings and qualifiers.
Tournament season in Colorado peaks from late spring through early fall, and good dates at popular courses book months ahead. Scrambles usually include a shotgun start, on-course contests like longest drive and closest to the pin, raffles and an awards meal. Mountain tournaments offer cooler temperatures in summer, while Front Range events can run into October.

Formats
Formats and how they work
Tournament
A one-time event, usually one day, sometimes a weekend. Players or teams sign up once, play the event and finish with results and awards. In Colorado many tournaments raise money for a cause, with sponsors, prizes and a social hour.

Clinic, camp or lessons
Instruction rather than competition. A clinic is a short group session on one skill; a camp runs several days; lessons can be private or small group. Most are grouped by age or skill level.

Match Play
Players or teams compete hole by hole: win a hole, go one up. The side that wins more holes wins the match, no matter the total strokes. Often run as a bracket over several weeks or a weekend.

Best Ball
Every player plays their own ball the whole hole, and the team counts the lowest score on each hole (sometimes the best two). It rewards solid individual play while still letting teammates cover a bad hole.

Every way to run a golf event
Most Colorado charity and amateur golf events are spring through fall tournaments at public or private courses, with groups of four playing a team format followed by a meal and awards.
When to run it: Most Colorado courses host outings from April through October, and June and September dates fill first. In winter, events move to simulator leagues and indoor contests.
Scramble
Each player in the group hits, the team picks the best shot, and everyone plays from there. Lowest team score wins, which keeps pace quick and is friendly for all skill levels.
Best Ball
Everyone plays their own ball the whole hole, and the team counts the lowest score (or two lowest) on each hole. Lowest team total wins.
Shamble
The team picks the best drive, then each player plays their own ball into the hole from that spot. The organizer counts one or two best scores per hole.
Captain's Choice
Another name for a scramble: the captain picks the best shot each time and all players hit from there. Lowest team score wins.
Alternate Shot
Two partners share one ball and take turns hitting until it is holed, usually alternating who tees off. Lowest team score wins.
Chapman / Pinehurst
Both partners tee off, swap balls for the second shot, then pick one ball and alternate shots until it is holed. Lowest team score wins.
Stroke Play
Each golfer counts every stroke over the round, and the lowest total wins. Organizers often split flights by handicap and may award gross and net prizes.
Modified Stableford
Players earn points on each hole based on score versus par, such as points for birdies and deductions for bogeys. Highest point total wins.
Match Play
Players or teams compete hole by hole, and whoever wins more holes wins the match. Organizers usually run it as a bracket over several rounds.
Skins
Each hole is worth a prize, or skin, won by the single lowest score. Ties carry the skin over to the next hole, raising the stakes.
League
A weekly evening league where golfers play nine holes, often in pairs or teams, and earn points toward season standings and a final championship.
Clinic, camp or lessons
A coach or club pro runs stations for full swing, chipping and putting on the range and practice green, often for juniors or new golfers.
Social or open play
A casual round or nine-hole outing with no formal scoring, where golfers are grouped by the organizer and the focus is fun and networking.
Make it memorable
Fun golf event ideas
Side contests, fundraisers and traditions that people remember as much as the results.
Longest Drive Contest
On one marked hole, the longest drive that stays in the fairway wins a prize. Quick to run, and big hitters love the bragging rights.
Closest to the Pin
On a par 3, a flag marks the closest tee shot to the hole. Every golfer gets a real shot at a prize, whatever their handicap.
Mulligan Packages
Golfers buy a pack of mulligans at check-in for a few dollars each. Easy money for the cause, and bad shots sting a lot less.
Golf Ball Drop
Sell numbered balls, then drop them from a lift or ladder over a green. Closest to the pin wins half the pot. A Colorado raffle license may be needed.
Plaid and Polos Day
Golfers show up in loud plaid, retro knickers or matching team polos. Vote on the best dressed foursome at awards for an easy crowd favorite.
Sponsor Hole Hosts
A sponsor staffs one hole with snacks, swag and a quick challenge. They meet every foursome face to face, which beats a sign on a stake.
Junior Putting Contest
Kids and family members putt on the practice green while the round is on. Everyone gets a ribbon, and the best putt wins a small prize.
Last Place Trophy
The highest scoring foursome takes home a goofy gag trophy and poses for a photo. It keeps the mood light and gets plenty of laughs.
