Step by step
Running a skate event in Colorado? Here's how to plan it, pick a format and run it on Colorado Under Par, start to finish.
What it looks like
Colorado skate and BMX events take place at city skate parks and bike parks from spring through fall, with kids, teens and adults competing by age and skill level.
Formats
- Skateboard Street
- Skaters ride a course of ledges, rails, stairs and banks, doing tricks during a timed run.
- Skateboard Park
- Skaters flow through a park of ramps, quarter pipes and transitions in timed runs.
- BMX Park / Street
- Riders perform tricks on park ramps or street features during timed runs.
- Bowl / Vert
- Skaters or riders carve a deep bowl or vert ramp and do airs and lip tricks.
- BMX Dirt Jump
- Riders take a line of packed dirt jumps and do tricks in the air.
- Best Trick
- Riders pick one feature and try their hardest trick within a time window.
- Game of S.K.A.T.E.
- Two skaters take turns setting tricks on flat ground.
- BMX Flatland
- Riders balance and spin the bike on smooth flat ground with no ramps.
- Best Trick Contest
- Riders and skaters get a set time to land their best trick on one feature, and the crowd helps judge. Fast and exciting.
- Sponsor a Ramp
- Local shops or families sponsor a ramp or rail with a banner and named award. Clear and easy to explain.
- Golden Wheel Trophy
- Winners get a painted wheel or sprocket trophy, and the best slam gets a gag prize. Pose both with the crowd for a photo.

Tip
One tip for first-timers: require helmets for everyone and run practice in small groups by age, so younger riders are not dodging advanced riders on the same features.
