Step by step
Running a jiu-jitsu event in Colorado? Here's how to plan it, pick a format and run it on Colorado Under Par, start to finish.
What it looks like
Colorado grappling tournaments are held at gyms, schools and event centers year round, for kids, teens and adults ranked by belt, with many local academies sending teams.
Formats
- Gi (Points / IBJJF)
- Athletes wear the traditional uniform and score points for takedowns, sweeps, passes and mount, with advantages and penalties.
- No-Gi
- Athletes wear shorts and rash guards with no jacket grips.
- Submission-Only
- Matches are won only by submission.
- Round Robin
- Small groups, often three or four athletes, face everyone in their bracket.
- EBI / Overtime
- A submission-only match that goes to overtime rounds if nobody taps.
- Superfight
- A single featured match between two matched athletes, often longer than standard.
- Submission Only Bracket
- Run an optional bracket where matches end only by tap or time, judged by certified referees. Strict rules and quick taps keep it safe.
- Pledge Per Tap
- Friends pledge a set amount for every submission an athlete earns. It builds hype while referees keep safety front and center.
- Team Points Trophy
- Award a trophy to the gym with the most medals across all divisions. The team photo with the trophy becomes a yearly tradition.
Build it
In the Organizer Dashboard, click Create event and pick jiu-jitsu and your format. Every tab, word and Start here guide then follows your sport.
Registration
Choose your team size and divisions, like kids, teens and white belt. In Registration, ask what you need from each entrant, like weight for weigh-in and belt rank.
Results
Open Brackets and schedule. Pick the division, pool play or a bracket, your mats, the first game time and minutes per game. Each of your mats gets its own phone link for scores, and every score updates the bracket for everyone. Tick Post on the event page so players follow it live.
Event day
Athletes check in, step on the scale at their match time or the night before, warm up in a staging area, compete when their bracket is called to a mat, then medal on the podium. For weigh-ins, Check-in has a scale weight box under each competitor: green means they make their class, red shows how far over.
Fun ideas
Make it memorable. Three ideas people love. Submission Only Bracket. Run an optional bracket where matches end only by tap or time, judged by certified referees. Strict rules and quick taps keep it safe. Pledge Per Tap. Friends pledge a set amount for every submission an athlete earns. It builds hype while referees keep safety front and center. Team Points Trophy. Award a trophy to the gym with the most medals across all divisions. The team photo with the trophy becomes a yearly tradition.
Tip
One tip for first-timers: publish an estimated schedule by division and age so families are not waiting all day, and have a medic or trainer at the mats. Building is free, then 1% per paid order plus card processing, paid to your own Stripe account. Stuck? Ask Caddie or search Need help in your dashboard. Start at coloradounderpar.com/sell-tickets.
