Every way to run a jiu-jitsu event
Colorado grappling tournaments are held at gyms, schools and event centers year round, for kids, teens and adults ranked by belt, with many local academies sending teams.
Gi (Points / IBJJF)
Athletes wear the traditional uniform and score points for takedowns, sweeps, passes and mount, with advantages and penalties. A submission or most points wins.
No-Gi
Athletes wear shorts and rash guards with no jacket grips. Scoring is usually points based, with a submission ending the match early.
Submission-Only
Matches are won only by submission. If time runs out, it goes to overtime or a judges' decision, depending on the rules.
Round Robin
Small groups, often three or four athletes, face everyone in their bracket. Most wins, then submissions or points, decides the winner.
EBI / Overtime
A submission-only match that goes to overtime rounds if nobody taps. Athletes start from set positions, and the fastest escape or submission wins.
Superfight
A single featured match between two matched athletes, often longer than standard. Usually scheduled as a highlight at the end of the event.
Clinic, camp or lessons
Instructors teach techniques and positions, then partners drill and roll. Group by belt and size, and keep safety rules clear.
Social or open play
Open mat time where people roll with partners at their own pace. No scoring, and everyone respects taps and safety.
Make it memorable
Fun jiu-jitsu event ideas
Side contests, fundraisers and traditions that people remember as much as the results.
Submission Only Bracket
Run an optional bracket where matches end only by tap or time, judged by certified referees. Strict rules and quick taps keep it safe.
Drill Speed Challenge
Athletes race through a timed technique drill with a cooperative partner, no live rolling. Fastest clean run wins a prize.
Pledge Per Tap
Friends pledge a set amount for every submission an athlete earns. It builds hype while referees keep safety front and center.
Sponsor a Belt Rank
Businesses sponsor each belt division with signs and award presentations. It honors athletes at every level.
Gi Color Theme
Invite athletes to wear a themed color gi or rash guard for the cause. Team photos become a wall of support.
Sponsored Recovery Zone
A sponsor hosts a cool down area with water, stretching mats and fruit. Athletes love having a calm spot between matches.
Kids Self Defense Seminar
Certified instructors teach a short, no contact self defense lesson for kids. Families leave with useful skills and smiles.
Team Points Trophy
Award a trophy to the gym with the most medals across all divisions. The team photo with the trophy becomes a yearly tradition.
