Step by step
Running a horseshoes event in Colorado? Here's how to plan it, pick a format and run it on Colorado Under Par, start to finish.
What it looks like
Horseshoes events in Colorado happen at parks, fairgrounds and backyards in summer, often at charity picnics, county fairs and casual club tournaments.
Formats
- Singles
- Two players pitch against each other, taking turns throwing two shoes per inning.
- Doubles
- Two players per team, with partners at opposite ends of the pit.
- Round Robin
- Every player or team in a group plays each other once.
- Cancellation Scoring
- Only one side scores per inning, after canceling matching shoes.
- Count-All Scoring
- Every shoe counts, so both players score each inning.
- Ringer % / Handicap
- Players are handicapped by their ringer percentage so mixed skill levels compete fairly.
- League
- Players or teams meet weekly over a summer season, with standings tracked and a final night or playoff.
- Ringer Challenge
- Players donate for five throws, with prizes for every ringer. It is a crowd favorite and easy to run.
- Buy a Bonus Toss
- Players donate for one extra toss in a round. It keeps the game fair and raises money for the cause.
- Golden Horseshoe Trophy
- The champion wins a painted golden horseshoe trophy. Add a gag prize for the most creative miss.
