Every way to run a horseshoes event
Horseshoes events in Colorado happen at parks, fairgrounds and backyards in summer, often at charity picnics, county fairs and casual club tournaments.
Singles
Two players pitch against each other, taking turns throwing two shoes per inning. First to a target score or most points after a set number of shoes wins.
Doubles
Two players per team, with partners at opposite ends of the pit. Each pitches against the opponent at their end, and team points are combined.
Round Robin
Every player or team in a group plays each other once. Most wins, then total points, decides the winner.
Cancellation Scoring
Only one side scores per inning, after canceling matching shoes. Ringers are 3 points and close shoes are 1, and games often go to 40.
Count-All Scoring
Every shoe counts, so both players score each inning. Games are usually a set number of shoes, and highest total wins.
Ringer % / Handicap
Players are handicapped by their ringer percentage so mixed skill levels compete fairly. Handicap points are added before the game.
League
Players or teams meet weekly over a summer season, with standings tracked and a final night or playoff.
Clinic, camp or lessons
Experienced pitchers teach grip, stance, release and scoring rules, then players practice. Great for beginners.
Social or open play
Casual pitching where anyone can join a game. Keep score loosely and rotate players onto pits.
