Venue Overview

Set along the scenic Yampa River in the heart of northwest Colorado, Yampa Valley Golf Course is the oldest and most affordable 18-hole facility in the region, and the only 18-hole public course in this part of the state. First opened in 1968, the course spreads across more than 240 acres of cottonwoods, wetlands, native grasses, and sage just outside Craig, roughly a 50-minute drive from downtown Steamboat Springs. It’s a course built on community, offering a genuinely welcoming atmosphere and a round that won’t strain any golf budget. Craig sits in Moffat County along the Yampa River corridor, and the golf course has become one of the area’s longest-running recreational institutions, predating much of the region’s modern development.

About the Course

Yampa Valley’s 18-hole layout winds through riverside terrain shaped by cottonwoods, wetlands, and open native grasses, giving golfers a distinctly Western Slope setting unlike the mountain-resort courses found further south and east. As the region’s only 18-hole public course, it draws golfers from across Moffat County and beyond who want a full, walkable round without the price tag of a resort track. The Yampa Valley Golf Association, which operates the course, is focused on providing a quality golfing experience with a well-trained, motivated staff dedicated to keeping the course affordable and enjoyable for the whole community. The riverside setting also brings an abundance of wildlife and mature cottonwood trees into play, giving the round a distinctly natural, unhurried feel from the first tee to the eighteenth green.

Practice Facilities

Golfers can warm up before their round at Yampa Valley’s practice facilities, getting a feel for the course’s riverside terrain before heading out. The course’s flat, open layout along the Yampa River makes it an approachable, easy-walking track well suited to golfers working on all parts of their game. The course is open seasonally, with hours that expand through the peak summer months to accommodate longer daylight and heavier play.

Dining and Amenities

The on-site restaurant at Yampa Valley Golf Course is open to both golfers and non-golfers, serving snacks, sandwiches, salads, and heartier meals alongside a full bar area where players can relax after their round. The restaurant and patio offer views of the course and a casual, relaxed atmosphere that has made it a local gathering spot in Craig well beyond just golf. The course also hosts a full slate of leagues, including Men’s and Ladies’ Leagues, along with a membership program for regular players looking for season-long value.

Lessons & Instruction

Yampa Valley Golf Course is a community-run facility without a dedicated teaching professional on staff. Golfers looking for lessons in the area are encouraged to contact the golf shop directly for current recommendations and regional instruction options.

Tournaments & Events

Yampa Valley hosts tournaments and league play throughout the golf season, with a published club calendar covering everything from weekly league nights to seasonal tournaments. As Northwest Colorado’s only 18-hole public course, Yampa Valley serves as the primary competitive golf venue for the Craig and Moffat County area, drawing golfers from across the region for its events. The course also supports charitable and community fundraising events, with the restaurant and clubhouse often serving as the gathering point before and after a shotgun start.
