About the Course

Lakewood's design history reads like a tour through American golf architecture's most important eras. The club got its start in 1905 with a rudimentary nine-hole course of dirt fairways and sandy greens, formally incorporating in 1908 when Tom Bendelow was brought in to design the original layout. By 1910, the course had grown to a full 18 holes with grass greens and fairways. In 1916, Donald Ross — one of the defining architects of golf's Golden Age — reshaped the layout, introducing the strategic bunkering, undulating greens, and risk-reward design that remain the course's foundation today, and making Lakewood one of only four Ross-designed courses anywhere in Colorado.

A Gil Hanse Restoration Rooted in Colorado

In 2017, Lakewood's Ross design was restored under the guidance of Gil Hanse, the architect behind the Rio 2016 Olympic golf course and one of the most respected restoration specialists working today. Hanse's connection to the club runs deeper than a single project: he first began consulting at Lakewood back in 1993, during a stretch when he lived in nearby Evergreen while studying at the University of Denver. That long relationship shaped a restoration focused on honoring Ross's original strategic intent rather than modernizing it away, and the result has helped Lakewood earn recognition as one of the PGA's "Best in the West" clubs and a spot among the PGA's Top 100 courses.

A Storied Championship History

Lakewood's championship pedigree extends well beyond its design credentials. The club has hosted three USGA Championships and one Trans-Mississippi Championship over its history, and golf legends including Mildred "Babe" Didrikson Zaharias have played its fairways. Today, Lakewood maintains what's regarded as one of the most active golf programs in the Denver area, featuring a full slate of member tournaments, clinics, instruction, and social events built around the course's historic layout.

Members and their guests can arrange private lessons covering the full swing and short game, and the club runs a summer junior golf program that builds skills and friendships from June through July.
