Venue Overview
The University of Denver Golf Club at Highlands Ranch (formerly known as Highlands Ranch Golf Course) is a semi-private, 18-hole golf course in Highlands Ranch, Colorado, designed by three-time U.S. Open Champion Hale Irwin and opened in 1998. Playing to a par of 72 across 7,179 yards, with expansive bentgrass greens that many consider among the best in the region, the course offers panoramic views of the Rocky Mountain Front Range. In 2012, the club was gifted to the University of Denver by the Ron Moore family, and it now serves as the proud home of DU’s Division I men’s and women’s varsity golf programs.
About the Course
Hale Irwin’s design at the University of Denver Golf Club at Highlands Ranch pairs a genuinely playable par-72 layout with some of the best-conditioned bentgrass greens in the region, set against a backdrop of sweeping Front Range mountain views. As a three-time U.S. Open Champion, Irwin brought a tour-tested eye for strategic design to the course, and that pedigree shows in a layout that continues to challenge collegiate golfers at the Division I level while remaining accessible to public and member play.

- 7,179 yards from the longest tees
- Expansive bentgrass greens regarded as among the best in the region
- Panoramic views of the Rocky Mountain Front Range
- Semi-private club, home to University of Denver Division I men’s and women’s golf teams
- Gifted to the University of Denver in 2012 by the Ron Moore family
A Design From a Three-Time U.S. Open Champion
Hale Irwin ranks among the most accomplished players in American golf history. He won three U.S. Opens, in 1974 at Winged Foot, 1979, and again in 1990, when he became the oldest U.S. Open champion ever at age 45, and captured 20 PGA Tour titles overall, played on five U.S. Ryder Cup teams, and captained the 1994 U.S. Presidents Cup team. His dominance continued into his 50s: Irwin remains the all-time leader in PGA Tour Champions victories and earnings, with 45 wins on the senior circuit. That championship-caliber design eye shaped the Highlands Ranch layout when it opened in 1998, and it’s the same competitive standard that now hosts a Division I collegiate golf program.
A Gift That Built a Golf Program
In 2012, Highlands Ranch Golf Club was gifted to the University of Denver by the Ron Moore family, fulfilling a vision set by Mr. Moore, a University of Denver Hall of Famer. That gift transformed the course into the University of Denver Golf Club at Highlands Ranch, giving the university’s Division I men’s and women’s varsity golf programs a true home course and extending DU’s mission of providing high-quality recreational and wellness programming to the surrounding community for generations to come.
