Venue Overview

Columbine Country Club is a premier private country club in Columbine Valley, Colorado, just minutes south of downtown Denver, and one of the most historically significant clubs in the state. Established in 1955 and built around a championship course designed by Colorado's preeminent mid-century architect Henry Hughes, Columbine famously hosted the 1967 PGA Championship, where Don January outlasted Arnold Palmer and Jack Nicklaus to win the major. Renovated by acclaimed architect Rees Jones and consistently ranked among the top private courses in Colorado, the club today offers 27 holes of golf, championship pedigree, tennis, a family pool, and a stunning modern clubhouse, all wrapped in a warm, multigenerational family atmosphere.

About the Course

Columbine's 18-hole Championship Course is a Henry Hughes design that opened in 1955 and was renovated in 2020 by nationally recognized architect Rees Jones and co-designer Greg Muirhead. Playing to a par of 72 and 7,427 yards from the championship tees, it runs along Dutch Creek and the South Platte River, with a memorable par 4 built around an island green. The club also offers a 9-hole, links-style par-3 course. As a private club, play is reserved for members and their guests. Course features: 18-hole, par-72 Championship Course designed by Henry Hughes 7,427 yards from the championship tees, renovated by Rees Jones in 2020 Opened in 1955, with holes along Dutch Creek and the South Platte River A signature par 4 built around an island green Relatively flat terrain that places a premium on precise shot-making A separate 9-hole, links-style par-3 course, added in 1999 Consistently ranked among the top private courses in Colorado Host of the 1967 PGA Championship

A Course With History

Columbine holds a singular place in Colorado golf history as one of only two clubs in the state ever to host a men's major championship. In the summer of 1967, it was the center of the golf world when it staged the 49th PGA Championship, where Don January held off legends Arnold Palmer and Jack Nicklaus before defeating Don Massengale in an 18-hole Monday playoff. At 7,436 yards, Columbine was the longest course on which a major had ever been played to that point. The championship was actually scheduled for 1966, but a South Platte River flood washed away part of the course, forcing a one-year postponement and a swap of dates with Ohio's Firestone Country Club. Beyond that major, Columbine hosted U.S. Open qualifying for decades, cementing its reputation as a genuine championship test designed by Henry Hughes, the preeminent Colorado architect of his era.

The Playing Experience

Columbine is proof that a course does not need dramatic elevation to challenge the very best. Famously flat for a Colorado layout, it defends itself with narrow fairways, mature trees, and water along Dutch Creek and the South Platte River, so precise shot-making, not raw power, is the key to scoring, right down to the memorable par 4 played to an island green. The 2020 Rees Jones renovation modernized the course, removing many trees and bringing the bunkering more prominently into play to improve both challenge and playability. Members can also sharpen their games on the walking-only, links-style par-3 course, which doubles as the foundation for the club's nationally recognized junior golf program. It is a historic, refined test that has stood up to the legends of the game.

Beyond Golf: Tennis, Pool & Club Life

Columbine is a complete family club with much more than golf: Seven tennis courts, including two award-winning clay courts A family pool complex with dining at the Poolside Cafe A stunning 45,000-square-foot clubhouse with multiple dining and banquet areas A nationally recognized junior golf program A warm, multigenerational family atmosphere
