Venue Overview

Flatirons Golf Course is the City of Boulder's historic municipal golf course, a classic 18-hole layout that has been the heart of Boulder golf since 1938. Designed by early golf architect William H. Tucker and operated by the City of Boulder Parks and Recreation Department, this timeless par-70 course is beloved for its tree-lined fairways, small greens, and genuine shot-making challenge, all on a remarkably walkable, flat piece of ground near the University of Colorado. With views of Boulder's famous Flatirons, a certified Audubon sanctuary designation, year-round play, and more than 50,000 rounds a year, it is an accessible, affordable, and richly historic home for tournaments, outings, and everyday golf.

About the Course

Flatirons is an 18-hole, par-70 course designed by architect William H. Tucker and opened in 1938, making it one of the most storied courses on the Front Range. A classic par-70 layout, a style uncommon in the area, it plays to roughly 6,900 yards with multiple tees, winding through mature trees, several lakes and streams, and small, well-protected greens. Set on 125 acres with no houses lining most of the fairways, it is managed by the City of Boulder and open to the public. Course features: 18-hole, par-70 course designed by William H. A Course With History

Flatirons carries nearly a century of Boulder golf history. The game arrived in Boulder in 1914 with a nine-hole, sand-green track at Chautauqua Park, and in 1933 the members of the Boulder Country Club commissioned architect William H. Tucker to design a proper course, which opened in 1938 with help from President Roosevelt's New Deal programs. During World War II, the front nine was fenced off and closed so cattle could graze there as part of the war effort, and local golf guru George Hoos caddied at the club during those years. In 1986, the City of Boulder Parks and Recreation Department took over operations, running Flatirons as the municipal course it remains today. In 2010 it earned certification as an Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary, a designation it has maintained ever since.

The Playing Experience

Flatirons is a classic, honest test of golf where everything is right out in front of you. Despite its name, the course is famously flat, which makes it a walker's delight, but do not mistake flat for easy: tree-lined fairways, several lakes and streams, and small, subtly contoured greens demand accuracy and a sharp short game. The lack of houses along most of the fairways keeps the focus purely on golf, and the classic par-70 routing rewards players who keep the ball in play, the 9th, a tricky par 4 with out-of-bounds left and lakes right, and the par-3 11th, with its tricky putting surface, are the ones that stick with you. Well-conditioned, centrally located, and a genuine bargain, it is easy to see why locals return again and again.
