New to this?
Colorado amateur wrestling ranges from youth club tournaments to high school and adult open events, held in school gyms on several mats, mostly in winter with freestyle and Greco events in spring.
The US school style, focused on control and riding time with three periods. Points come from takedowns, escapes, reversals and near falls, or a pin wins.
An international style where wrestlers can attack the legs. Matches have two periods, with points for takedowns and exposure, and a pin or tech fall ends it.
An international style with no holds below the waist. Wrestlers score with throws and upper body work, in two periods, or win by pin.
Two teams face off with one wrestler per weight class. Each match earns team points, and the team with the most points wins.
Wrestlers are seeded into brackets by age and weight, often with consolation rounds for places. Run several mats at once to keep it moving.
Standing wrestling in a sand circle with short matches. Points come from taking an opponent down or pushing them out, and first to three wins.
Coaches teach stance, takedowns, escapes and pins, then live wrestling. Group by age and weight, and plan for water and rest breaks.
Open mat sessions where wrestlers drill and spar with partners of similar size. A coach supervises, and there is no scoring.
Make it memorable
Side contests, fundraisers and traditions that people remember as much as the results.
Track the quickest pin in each age group across the event. Winners get a special medal, decided by referees under normal rules.
Coaches lead a timed drill on technique, judged by referees with no live wrestling. It lets more athletes earn a prize safely.
Wrestlers collect pledges for each point or win during the tournament. Families love following the total match by match.
Businesses sponsor each mat with a banner on the wall behind it. Every match on that mat promotes the sponsor.
Teams wear a themed color, like pink for a cause, on warm up shirts. It shows support and fills the stands with color.
A sponsor runs the concession stand with healthy snacks and water. Proceeds go to the cause, and families appreciate the fuel.
Certified coaches run a no contact skills clinic for young kids on a separate mat. Every child gets a high-five and a sticker.
Coaches vote on the most outstanding wrestler of the day. Add a sportsmanship award for the athlete who showed the most respect.
