Every way to run a water polo event
Water polo events in Colorado are club and masters tournaments held year round in indoor pools, with youth, high school and adult players.
Standard (7v7)
Six field players and a goalkeeper per side in deep water, playing four timed quarters. Most goals wins.
Coed / Mixed
Teams include both men and women, often with a minimum number of each in the water. Played with standard rules.
Masters
Adult players grouped by age, often 30 and older, playing standard rules with friendly, experienced competition.
Tournament Bracket
Teams are seeded into a bracket after pool games, then winners advance through knockout games to a championship.
Open / Rec Division
A division for newer and casual players, often with modified rules, shorter games and a focus on fun.
League
Teams play scheduled games over a season, with standings leading to a final tournament.
Clinic, camp or lessons
Coaches teach treading water, passing, shooting and positioning, often for youth or beginners.
Social or open play
Casual scrimmages in the pool where players show up, split teams and play without keeping standings.
Make it memorable
Fun water polo event ideas
Side contests, fundraisers and traditions that people remember as much as the results.
Corner Target Shots
Hang targets in the corners of the goal and award points for each hit. Players and fans can try between games.
Eggbeater Hold Challenge
See who can tread water with both arms raised the longest. It shows off the sport's toughest skill and gets the crowd counting.
Pledge Per Goal
Supporters pledge a set amount for every goal their team scores. Each goal raises money and pumps up the pool deck.
Rubber Duck Race
Sell numbered rubber ducks, then race them across the pool. The first duck to finish wins a prize. A Colorado raffle license may be needed.
Beach Party Theme
Fans wear bright shirts and sunglasses, with beach balls and music on deck. The best dressed fan wins a prize.
Sponsored Shade Tent
A sponsor hosts a shade tent on the pool deck with water and snacks. Families gather there all day, so the sponsor gets real face time.
Kids Inner Tube Polo
Kids play water polo while sitting in inner tubes, with lifeguards on duty. It is easy to learn and lots of fun.
Cap Signing Tradition
The winning team signs a cap that goes in a display case each year. Returning players love finding their names from past seasons.
