Every way to run a volleyball event
Colorado amateur volleyball runs indoors in rec center gyms during fall and winter and outdoors on sand courts in summer, with adult coed teams, youth clubs and charity tournaments.
Indoor 6v6
Six players per side rotate positions on a hard court. Matches are best of three sets to 25, with rally scoring where every serve scores a point.
Beach / Sand 2v2
Two players per side on sand, covering the whole court. Sets go to 21, best of three, and teams switch sides every seven points.
4v4
Four players per side, indoors or on grass or sand. It keeps more touches per player and is a popular coed and rec format.
Single Elimination
Teams are seeded into a bracket and a match loss ends their day. Winners advance until one team takes the final match.
Double Elimination
A team is out only after losing two matches. Losers drop to a back bracket, and that winner faces the main bracket winner.
Round Robin
Teams in a pool each play one another, often two sets per match. Sets won, then point differential, decide the standings.
League
Teams play a weekly match night over several weeks, with standings by matches or sets won and often a playoff night to finish.
Clinic, camp or lessons
Coaches lead drills on passing, setting, hitting and serving in small groups, then finish with controlled scrimmages.
Social or open play
Players show up, get split into teams on the spot and play casual games, rotating in and out with no standings.
Make it memorable
Fun volleyball event ideas
Side contests, fundraisers and traditions that people remember as much as the results.
Serve Accuracy Bullseye
Targets or towels sit in the back corners, and players earn points for serves that land on them. Quick to set up between matches.
Longest Rally Contest
Teams try for the longest rally with any touches allowed, and the record is posted all day. Spectators count along out loud.
Buy a Do Over Serve
Teams buy a few redo serve tickets before the tournament, with all money going to the cause. Simple, playful and adds funds fast.
Sponsor a Net
Businesses or families sponsor a court net with a banner and a named division trophy. Clear signage keeps sponsors happy all day.
Beach Party Theme
Grass or sand courts go full beach with leis, tropical shirts and island music. Add a best dressed team prize to boost the fun.
Sponsor Block Party Tent
A sponsor hosts a shaded tent with games, music and snacks for players between matches. Their name rides on every match announcement.
Kids Balloon Volley
Young kids play balloon volleyball on a short court during breaks. Easy, safe and adorable for parents to film.
Spike Trophy and Medals
Winners get a painted volleyball trophy, and a gag award goes to the best dive of the day. Pose both teams under the net for a group photo.
