Every way to run a snowboard event
Colorado snowboard and freestyle events happen at ski area terrain parks from December through April, with groms, teens and adults entering amateur contests by age and ability.
When to run it: January is freestyle season in Colorado, with world-class big air and slopestyle contests in the mountains. Plan a local rail jam, big air or knuckle huck session while everyone is talking about it, and keep a weather backup date.
Halfpipe
Riders drop into a U-shaped snow pipe and do tricks off each wall. Judges score each run on height, difficulty and style, and the best run counts.
Slopestyle
Riders take a course of jumps and rails, doing a trick on each feature. Judges score the full run, usually keeping each rider's best of two runs.
Big Air
Riders hit one large jump and perform their best trick. Judges score each jump, and the best one or two scores add up for the result.
Snowboard Cross
Four to six riders race side by side through a course of banks, rollers and jumps. The first riders across the finish advance in heats.
Banked Slalom
Riders race one at a time through a course of banked turns between gates. The fastest of their timed runs wins.
Rail Jam / Jib
Riders session a set of rails and boxes for a timed jam, landing as many tricks as they can. Judges pick winners on overall impression.
Knuckle Huck
Riders launch tricks off the rounded knuckle at the top of a jump landing instead of the jump itself. It is a creative, crowd-judged show.
Clinic, camp or lessons
Coaches teach park safety, jumps, rails and pipe riding by level, building tricks step by step on smaller features first.
Social or open play
A casual park session where riders hang out and ride features together, with no judging or results.
Make it memorable
Fun snowboard event ideas
Side contests, fundraisers and traditions that people remember as much as the results.
Best Trick Jam
Riders get a set time to land their best trick on the main feature, and judges score style. High energy and fun to watch.
Slow Ride Challenge
Riders try to go as slowly as possible down a short course without stopping or falling. A funny contest that rewards control.
Sponsor a Rail
Businesses sponsor a rail, box or jump with a banner and a named best trick award. Clear visibility for local shops.
Costume Shred Day
Riders dress in costumes for a parade lap down the hill, with voting at the base. Safe, fun and always photographed.
Lift Line Raffle
Sell raffle tickets at the base for gear, passes and lessons donated by local shops. A Colorado raffle license may be needed.
Sponsor Warm Up Hut
A sponsor hosts a heated tent with hot cocoa, music and their branding. Riders and families gather there all day.
Kids Mini Park
A mellow kids park with tiny bumps and boxes lets young riders show off. Families love cheering from the side.
Shredder of the Year Plaque
A wooden plaque or old board trophy gets each year's top rider's name added. Pose winners with it at the base for a classic photo.
