Every way to run a field hockey event
Colorado field hockey is played by youth clubs, high school players and adult teams on turf fields in fall and spring, with indoor play in winter.
11v11 Outdoor
Standard full field games with ten field players and a goalie per side, in timed halves or quarters. Plan umpires for every game.
Indoor (6v6)
Played in a gym with side boards, five players and a goalie per side. Pushing only, no hitting, and games are short and fast.
Hockey5s (5v5)
Small field games with five players per side, often no goalie and small goals. Quick games with lots of touches.
7v7 Small-Side
Games on a half field with seven players per side including a goalie. Good for youth or smaller rosters.
Pool Play + Bracket
Teams play several pool games, then are seeded into playoff rounds. Pool records decide seeding, and the bracket winner is champion.
League
Teams play weekly games over a season, with standings tracked and playoffs at the end.
Clinic, camp or lessons
Coaches teach stick skills, passing, dribbling and positioning, then small-sided games. Group by age and level.
Social or open play
Pickup games where players are mixed into teams. Casual rules, no standings, and everyone gets playing time.
Make it memorable
Fun field hockey event ideas
Side contests, fundraisers and traditions that people remember as much as the results.
Penalty Stroke Shootout
Players donate to take a penalty stroke against a volunteer goalie in full gear. Prizes go to anyone who scores.
Dribble Cone Race
Players race through a cone course while keeping the ball close. Fastest time wins and spectators cheer every turn.
Sponsor a Goal
Businesses pledge an amount for every goal scored in the tournament. The running total shows on a board at the field.
Stick Signing Auction
Players sign a stick that goes up for auction after the final. It becomes a keepsake for a fan or local club.
Neon Sock Day
Teams wear neon or themed socks for the cause. It adds color to the field and makes great team photos.
Sponsored Halftime Contest
A sponsor runs a quick halftime shooting game for fans. Their name is on the prize and in the announcements.
Kids Try a Stick Clinic
Coaches run a short clinic for young kids with soft balls and junior sticks. Families watch their kids try something new.
Player of the Day Award
Each team picks a player of the day who gets a special pin or patch. Add a fun award for the loudest bench.
