Venue Overview
Sonnenalp Golf Club is a private championship course in Edwards, Colorado, 16 miles west of Vail Village in the sun-drenched lower Vail Valley. Opened in 1980 and designed by Jay Morrish and Bob Cupp, the course has hosted multiple Colorado Open Championships and a USGA Junior Amateur Championship. While membership is required for regular play, guests staying at the Sonnenalp Hotel in Vail enjoy exclusive access to preferred tee times, making this storied club one of the few ways for visitors to experience private Vail Valley golf. The club’s down-valley location also gives it one of the longest golf seasons in the region, typically open from early April to late October.
About the Course
The 18-hole Sonnenalp course plays from 5,100 to over 7,000 yards, with an award-winning orientation that showcases dramatic morning and afternoon sun alongside sweeping views of the Rocky Mountains. Easily walkable and enjoyable for golfers of every level, the layout offers everyday playability paired with real challenge for those who seek it. Its championship pedigree, including past Colorado Open Championships and a USGA Junior Amateur, speaks to a course that holds up to elite competitive play while still welcoming members and hotel guests for a relaxed mountain round.
Practice Facilities
Sonnenalp’s practice facilities include a wide variety of tee and target options along with short game areas built with plenty of contour, giving golfers a genuine model of what a practice facility should be. Certified instructors are available on-site to help golfers of any level sharpen their game before heading to the first tee.
Dining and Amenities
Members and guests can enjoy fine dining at Harvest, where homestyle fare meets gourmet cuisine against a backdrop of mountain views. Beyond golf, the Sonnenalp Club offers a state-of-the-art fitness center, full-service spa, and tennis courts, rounding out a complete mountain club experience for members and Sonnenalp Hotel guests alike. The club’s amenities are designed to extend the day well beyond the eighteenth green, giving members and their families a full slate of activities to enjoy together in the Vail Valley.
Lessons & Instruction
- Kirby Lee, PGA: Head Golf Professional
- Joe Kamby, PGA: 1st Assistant Golf Professional
Sonnenalp’s PGA-certified golf staff, including Director of Instruction Pete Roach, provide lessons and coaching for members and eligible guests looking to improve their game in one of the Vail Valley’s finest settings. Whether it is a quick tune-up before a round or a series of lessons built around long-term development, the golf shop staff can tailor instruction to the player and the course’s distinctive mountain conditions.
Tournaments & Events
Sonnenalp Golf Club has a proven tournament pedigree, having hosted multiple Colorado Open Championships and a USGA Junior Amateur Championship over the years. Member tournaments and club events fill out the golf calendar each season, taking advantage of one of the longest playing seasons in the Vail Valley thanks to the course’s lower-elevation, sun-drenched setting. That extended season, running from early spring well into fall, gives the club’s competitive calendar more room to breathe than many higher-elevation Vail Valley courses.
Planning Your Event Here
