Step by step
Running a figure skating event in Colorado? Here's how to plan it, pick a format and run it on Colorado Under Par, start to finish.
What it looks like
Figure skating events in Colorado are club-hosted competitions and shows held year round at ice arenas, mainly for youth skaters and adult skaters.
Formats
- Singles (Freeskate)
- Skaters perform a solo program set to music, with jumps, spins and footwork.
- Learn-to-Skate Comp
- Beginner skaters perform simple skills or short programs, often grouped by level and age.
- Showcase / Theatrical
- Skaters perform themed programs with costumes and acting, judged on artistry and storytelling more than jumps.
- Short Program
- A shorter program with a required list of elements, judged on how well each element is done.
- Ice Dance
- Partners skate together to set rhythms and patterns, judged on timing, footwork and unison.
- Pairs
- Two skaters perform together with lifts, throws and side-by-side jumps, judged on difficulty and unison.
- Synchronized Skating
- Teams of skaters perform formations in unison, judged on precision and teamwork.
- Speed Skating
- Skaters race around an oval track in heats or mass starts.
- Spin Count Challenge
- Skaters see who can do the most rotations in a single spin. The crowd counts out loud, and winners go by age group.
- Flower and Plush Toss
- Sell flowers and plush toys for fans to toss after programs. Toys are then donated to a local children's hospital.
- Podium Bouquet Photo
- Winners stand on a podium with bouquets for a group photo. It gives every skater a proud moment to remember.
