Step by step
Running a fencing event in Colorado? Here's how to plan it, pick a format and run it on Colorado Under Par, start to finish.
What it looks like
Fencing events in Colorado are club-hosted tournaments held year round in gyms and fencing clubs, with youth, adult and older fencers.
Formats
- Foil
- Fencers score with the tip on the torso only, using right of way rules.
- Epee
- Fencers score with the tip anywhere on the body, with no right of way, and both can score at once.
- Sabre
- Fencers score with the edge or tip above the waist, using right of way rules.
- Pools + DE (Individual)
- Fencers first fence everyone in small pools to 5 touches, then are seeded into a direct elimination bracket of bouts to 15.
- Team Relay
- Three-fencer teams take turns in a relay, each leg adding touches toward a team total, usually 45.
- Mixed / Open Weapon
- An open event where fencers of any gender, rating or age compete together, often in one weapon or a mix of weapons.
- Balloon Pop Challenge
- Fencers try to pop balloons taped to a target with clean touches. It is fast, loud and fun for spectators of all ages.
- Challenge the Coach
- Pay a few dollars to fence a coach or champion for a single touch. Win the touch and win a prize, and the cause wins either way.
- Salute and Arch Photo
- Finalists salute, and fellow fencers raise their blades to form an arch for the champion. It makes a striking photo and a lasting tradition.
