About the Course

The Club at Inverness's championship golf course is an 18-hole, par-70 layout designed by the highly regarded architect J. Press Maxwell and opened in 1974. A true PGA Championship course, it plays to 7,026 yards and is at once beautiful, playable, and challenging, demanding strategy and thoughtful approaches thanks to gentle but unforgiving slopes, rolling hills, and deep bunkers. Water comes into play on 11 of the 18 holes, and the par-3s are famously demanding. As a semi-private club, play is reserved for members and resort guests. A Course With History

Inverness has been a South Denver golf staple for half a century. When it opened in 1974, some wanted to name it Cottonwood Country Club, after the creek that runs through the property, but "Inverness" was chosen for its ties to golf's Scottish heritage. Over the years the course has hosted plenty of notable moments: President Bill Clinton has played here, and in 1978, Andy North staged an exhibition at Inverness the very week he won the U.S. Open at nearby Cherry Hills, later calling the par-3 3rd one of the toughest holes he had ever played. A resort was added alongside the course in 1989, and today, under the Hilton flag, Inverness continues its long tradition as one of Colorado's finest golf resorts.

The Playing Experience

Inverness is a classic J. Press Maxwell test, one that rewards strategy over raw power. The terrain ranges from relatively flat to genuinely hilly, producing sloped fairways and uneven lies, while gentle but unforgiving green complexes and deep bunkers demand precise, thoughtful approaches. Water is the defining hazard, coming into play on eleven of the eighteen holes, and the par-3s are the course's calling card, so demanding that a U.S. Open champion singled one out as among the toughest he'd faced. The undulating greens run fast and true, and the whole layout is immaculately maintained, a genuine surprise given its setting in the Inverness business park. Challenging yet fair from the right set of tees, it is a course golfers return to again and again.
