Venue Overview

Hugo Golf Club is a 9-hole public golf course in Hugo, Colorado, and one of a small handful of remaining sand-green golf courses in the state. Opened in 1960, the course plays to a par of 36 across 3,261 yards, with native buffalo grass fairways and hand-smoothed sand greens that give every round a distinctly old-school, rural Colorado character rarely found anywhere else in the state.

About the Course

Hugo Golf Club is a true throwback to early American golf, using sand greens instead of grass, a maintenance approach that made golf possible in dry, rural parts of the country long before modern irrigation. Players smooth the wind-rippled sand surface and choose their line before putting, adding a genuinely unique twist to the game. With no bunkers and no water hazards to worry about on the arid Eastern Plains, Hugo Golf Club offers a refreshingly simple, honest test of golf that has earned it a following among golfers seeking something different from the typical Colorado course.

Practice Facilities

Hugo Golf Club keeps things simple, with open practice space available near the first tee for golfers looking to get loose before their round.

Dining and Amenities

True to its rural, honor-system character, Hugo Golf Club operates with a straightforward, no-frills approach that keeps golf affordable and accessible. The course’s rustic charm and distinctive sand greens have made it a popular stop for golfers looking to check a genuinely unusual course off their list, drawing attention from golf writers and course-collectors chasing every course in Colorado.

Lessons & Instruction

Hugo Golf Club does not currently list a dedicated PGA-affiliated teaching professional. Golfers looking for formal instruction should plan to arrange lessons at a nearby regional facility, though the course’s laid-back atmosphere and unusual sand greens make it a memorable, low-pressure place to introduce new players to the game.

Tournaments & Events

Hugo Golf Club’s distinctive sand greens and rural charm make it a memorable host for casual tournaments, novelty scrambles, and community golf outings across Lincoln County. Its short, walkable layout keeps events easy to organize, and its rarity as one of Colorado’s last sand-green courses gives any event here a built-in conversation piece.

Planning Your Event Here

Few golf courses in Colorado offer the kind of only-here character that Hugo Golf Club provides, from its buffalo grass fairways to its hand-smoothed sand greens. That distinctiveness makes it a great option for golf trip itineraries, novelty tournaments, and community events looking for a genuinely memorable Eastern Plains golf experience.
