Venue Overview

The Golf Club of Dallas is a semi-private, 18-hole golf course in Dallas, Texas, and the last course designed by legendary architect Perry Maxwell before his death in late 1952 — completed for the club's 1953 opening by his son and collaborator, Press Maxwell. Previously known as Oak Cliff Country Club, the course hosted the PGA Tour's Dallas Open from 1958-1962 and again from 1964-1967, drawing champions like Sam Snead, Julius Boros, and Bert Yancey.

About the Course

Perry Maxwell — the architect behind Southern Hills Country Club in Tulsa, Colonial Country Club in Fort Worth, and the famous 10th green redesign at Augusta National — considered his work at The Golf Club of Dallas among his finest, and the club has taken great care to preserve that legacy. In 2002, with the assistance of Masters champion Charles Coody, the course underwent a renewal and light renovation aimed specifically at restoring its purity as a Perry and Press Maxwell design.

Perry Maxwell's Final Design

Perry Maxwell's design resume includes some of the most respected courses in American golf — Southern Hills, Colonial Country Club, Prairie Dunes, Augusta National's 10th hole redesign, and renovation work at Pine Valley and Maidstone. The Golf Club of Dallas holds a special place in that legacy as his last completed design, finished by his son Press after Perry's death in 1952. During the course's PGA Tour era, the Dallas Open — the tournament now played as the PGA Tour's Byron Nelson Championship — crowned champions including Sam Snead, Julius Boros, and Bert Yancey on these fairways.

A Course Saved From Development

In 2017, it was reported that The Golf Club of Dallas would be sold to a developer and replaced with roughly 500 homes. Instead, the property was purchased in 2020 by the Oak Cliff Bible Fellowship, a nearly 10,000-member church led by Dr. Tony Evans, whose new ownership committed to keeping the historic Maxwell-designed course intact as the centerpiece of the Oak Cliff community rather than developing it. That decision preserved one of Dallas golf's most significant properties for public and member play.
