Venue Overview
Gates Tennis Center is Denver's flagship public racquet-sports facility, sitting in Pulaski Park just off Cherry Creek. Built in 1975 through an agreement between the City of Denver and what is now The Park People, and named for benefactor Charles C. Gates Jr., the center is city-owned, nonprofit-overseen, and run on a pay-as-you-play basis with no memberships and no residency requirement. A $4.7 million reconstruction completed in 2008 rebuilt the clubhouse and courts, and over the past several years Gates has converted a meaningful share of its footprint to dedicated pickleball, making it one of the few Denver venues where competitive tennis and competitive pickleball genuinely share a campus.About the Courts
Gates operates an all-outdoor hard-court complex of roughly 26 to 30 playing courts, split between dedicated tennis and dedicated pickleball, with an additional pair of tennis courts that convert to pickleball when demand requires. The pickleball side started as a pilot on East Center Court in January 2021 with taped lines, was repainted into four permanent courts that August to host the Pro Pickleball Association Rocky Mountain Championships, and has expanded steadily since. Pickleball courts carry permanent lines and permanent nets rather than portable setups. Courts are lit for evening play, with weekday sessions running until 10:15 p.m., and Friday night pickleball mixers are played under the lights.A Public Facility With Championship Credentials
Gates does not play like a municipal court block. It is the longtime home of the Colorado State Open, which the USTA identified as the largest sanctioned tennis tournament in the country, and the facility has hosted CHSAA 5A state championships, local NCAA competition, and the 2021 Rocky Mountain Championships, where more than 1,000 participants and spectators turned out and select matches aired on ESPN3. Recognition has followed: USTA Outstanding Large Public Facility of the Year in 2008, Tennis Industry Magazine's Municipal Tennis Facility of the Year in 2016, and a Westword Readers' Choice award in 2023 for Best Place to Play Pickleball in Denver.Facilities & Amenities

Tennis programming spans group classes at a six-to-one ratio, Cardio Tennis, Noontime Tennis, and Winter Warriors. Junior programming runs year round, from Pee Wee for ages four to eight through Tennis Everyday for ages nine to 17, plus a summer Tennis and Pickleball Camp and a scholarship program covering lessons for players aged five to 18.Leagues & Events
The center hosts roughly 10 in-house tennis tournaments and seven in-house pickleball tournaments each year, including a July 4 event, National Pickleball Day, Labor Day, Halloween, Memorial Day, Summer Slam, and Fall Classic. Around 60 USTA teams compete out of Gates annually across Adult 18+, 40+, and 55+, Mixed, Trio, and Colorado Tennis Association daytime and twilight divisions. Pickleball open play is separated into recreational, competitive 4.0 and above, ladies-only, seniors, and combo sessions, with a weekend Top Dog Doubles league and Friday night social mixers.Planning Your Sporting Event Here
As a public facility with tournament-scale court capacity, Gates is one of the most accessible venues in Denver for organizers who need volume without a private club relationship. Courts are bookable online or by app five days ahead and by phone one day ahead, with a two-hour daily maximum per person for general play. The center also hosts company mixers, birthday parties, and private celebrations, and arranges semi-private group lessons for up to six players.
