Venue Overview

Cornerstone Club is a private golf and residential community set atop the Uncompahgre Plateau outside Montrose, near the Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park. Home to a championship course designed by Greg Norman and Matt Dusenberry, Cornerstone plays at elevations above 9,000 feet across 4,800 acres of protected land, with views spanning the San Juan Mountains, the West Elks, and Cimarron Ridge. The course has drawn national recognition, including Golf Magazine's call as one of the best high-altitude courses in the country, Golfweek's Top New Course honors, and a spot among Golf Digest's Best in State rankings. Membership is available exclusively to property owners, making Cornerstone one of the more distinctive private club experiences on Colorado's Western Slope. Its remote-but-accessible setting near the Black Canyon of the Gunnison gives members a genuine escape without sacrificing the amenities of a full-service club.

About the Course

Designed by Greg Norman with longtime design associate Matt Dusenberry, Cornerstone's routing follows the natural contours of the plateau, moving through aspen groves, sagebrush meadows, and open mountain terrain rather than forcing holes onto severe grades. Golf Course Architecture praised the routing specifically for using "broad, open terrain on a high plateau" rather than the punishing slopes that often plague mountain courses. Each hole feels distinct while remaining connected to the next, and the high-altitude setting adds another layer of strategy for golfers accustomed to lower elevations. The course has been featured in Golf Digest's rankings of the top courses in the United States and was named a "Mountain Miracle" by Golf Course Industry. Colorado AvidGolfer called the course and property a must-see, must-play destination, noting that the amenities alone are worth the trip.

Practice Facilities

Members have access to practice facilities built to support a full pre-round warmup, along with instructional programs led by the club's golf staff. Beyond golf, Cornerstone also offers racquet sports, ATV trails, fishing, and horseback riding, giving members a wide range of ways to spend time on the property between rounds. The practice areas take advantage of the same open plateau terrain that defines the golf course, giving members room to work on their full swing without feeling boxed in.

Dining and Amenities

Cornerstone's dining program is led by Executive Chef Bret Pafford, a Culinary Institute of America graduate with more than 26 years of experience, including kitchens in New York and California. The club operates three distinct venues: 92 Hundred, the clubhouse's fine-dining restaurant with panoramic views and a wine list of more than 600 bottles; Cap Rock, a livelier spot for casual gatherings with a diverse menu and rare spirits; and Elk Shack, an on-course stop for a bite mid-round. Together they give members a range of dining options from a quick turn stop to a full evening out.

Lessons & Instruction

Cornerstone's golf staff is available to members for instruction and game improvement.

  • Matt Marshall — Golf Pro (former PGA Tour Canada player, 2016 U.S. Open competitor)
  • Kendyll R. Bernatis — Assistant Professional

Tournaments & Events

As a private club, Cornerstone hosts member tournaments, club championships, and social golf events throughout the season rather than open public play. The club's high-altitude setting and wide-open routing make it a memorable stage for member-guest events and invitational rounds, and the club's Discovery Tour program gives prospective members a firsthand look at golf, dining, and the property before joining.

Planning Your Event Here

Because Cornerstone is a private, membership-based club, hosting an event here requires member sponsorship rather than open public booking. Members interested in organizing a tournament, member-guest outing, or private gathering should coordinate directly with the golf shop to arrange tee times and dining across 92 Hundred, Cap Rock, or the Elk Shack.
