Venue Overview

Challenger Golf Course is a 9-hole executive course tucked into the high desert just west of Crestone, Colorado, in the shadow of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains. Built in 1974 and playing to a par of 31 across 2,228 yards, Challenger is the only golf course in Saguache County, making it a welcoming local fixture for the small mountain town of Crestone and a convenient stop for golfers exploring the San Luis Valley.

About the Course

Challenger’s 9-hole layout is short by design, favoring precision and course management over raw length. The executive-style routing plays through open, high-desert terrain with the jagged profile of the Sangre de Cristo range rising to the east, giving every hole a dramatic mountain backdrop rarely found on a course this size. Semi-private in structure but open to public play, Challenger draws local golfers, Crestone visitors, and travelers making their way through the San Luis Valley looking for a relaxed, scenic round.

Practice Facilities

Challenger Golf Course offers an on-site driving range where golfers can warm up before heading to the first tee, along with cart and club rentals for visitors who arrive without their own equipment.

Dining and Amenities

As a small-town course, Challenger keeps its amenities simple and functional, with rental clubs and carts available on-site to make the course accessible to first-time visitors and locals alike. The course typically operates seasonally, open from mid-May through mid-October to align with Colorado’s high-altitude golf season.

Lessons & Instruction

Challenger Golf Course does not currently list a dedicated teaching professional. Golfers looking for formal instruction before or after their round should plan to arrange lessons at a nearby San Luis Valley facility, though the course’s short, forgiving layout makes it a great low-pressure place for beginners and juniors to build confidence.

Tournaments & Events

As the only golf course in Saguache County, Challenger serves as a natural gathering spot for local leagues, casual tournaments, and community golf outings throughout the season. Its short, walkable layout makes it easy to organize scrambles and group events without requiring a full day on the course.

Planning Your Event Here

Challenger Golf Course’s relaxed, small-town character and dramatic mountain views make it a great fit for casual golf outings, club fundraisers, and community tournaments looking for an easygoing San Luis Valley setting. Its short course length and welcoming local atmosphere make it especially well suited to beginner-friendly events, junior golf programs, and multi-generational group outings.

Apply for Event Management

Event Management Application (2027)
CUP manages 10 sporting events per season, and that is the cap.
Applications for the 2027 season are open now. Returning clients confirm their dates first, then remaining slots go to new clients. This is an application, not a booking, and it takes about 6 minutes.

Your organization

Who is hosting, and how we reach you.

Beneficiary

Only if the event raises money for a cause.

Your sporting event

The basics we need to judge fit.

Out-of-state note: our standard pricing covers events held in Colorado. Events outside Colorado are quoted individually with travel and on-site costs included.
Worth knowing before you submit: our fully-managed service starts at 100 people on site. Below that the economics do not work for either of us, so this is likely not a fit. You can still apply, and you can always list your sporting event on the CUP calendar instead.
This one gets a custom quote. Our standard service model covers single-day events with 100 to 160 people on site, including vendors. Larger fields and multi-day events still work, we just scope them and send a custom quote instead of a standard price.

What success looks like

So we can tell you straight whether we are the right team.

Budget and timing

Fully-managed service is a real line item. Straight answers save us both time.

A CUP engagement runs roughly 150 to 200 hours of planning, design, marketing and coordination, handled by one team from the first call to the final award. Applications need a real budget line for professional management, separate from venue, food and prizes.
Worth knowing before you submit: a fully-managed engagement sits above this range, so this is likely not a fit for 2027. You are welcome to apply anyway. If self-serve is the better move right now, you can list your sporting event and add promotion here: list your event.
