Every way to run a paddle event
Colorado paddle events happen on reservoirs, lakes and rivers from late spring through early fall, from casual stand up paddle races to whitewater festivals in mountain towns.
SUP Race
Stand up paddlers race a buoy course or point-to-point route, often with short and long distances. Riders start together or in waves, and fastest time wins.
Kayak Race
Kayakers race a flatwater or river course, often split by boat type and length. Mass or wave starts are common, and fastest time wins.
Whitewater Raft Race
Teams paddle rafts down a rapid section, sometimes with a sprint and a slalom. Combined team times decide the winners.
Canoe Race
Solo or tandem canoes race a lake loop or river stretch. Boats start in waves by class, and fastest finish time wins.
Dragon Boat
Teams of about 20 paddlers, a drummer and a steerer race long boats in heats, often 200 or 500 meters. Fastest teams advance to finals.
Rowing / Regatta
Crews race rowing shells in lanes over a set distance in heats and finals. Each race is grouped by boat type, age and skill.
Downriver / River Race
Paddlers race point-to-point down a river with individual or wave starts. Timing at the start and finish decides the fastest in each class.
Wakeboard / Water-Ski
Riders are pulled behind a boat and perform runs judged on tricks, slalom passes or jumps. Scores rank riders in age and skill divisions.
Clinic, camp or lessons
Instructors teach paddle strokes, balance, safety and self-rescue. Gear is often provided, and groups practice in calm water.
Social or open play
Casual group paddles, demo days or sunset paddles with no timing. Set a route, require life jackets and keep a safety boat nearby.
Make it memorable
Fun paddle event ideas
Side contests, fundraisers and traditions that people remember as much as the results.
Paddle Board Relay
Teams pass a paddle at the shore between legs of a short course. Splashy handoffs make it a crowd favorite.
Standing Yoga Challenge
Paddlers hold balance poses on their boards, and the last one standing wins. Calm water and life jackets keep it safe.
Rubber Duck Race
Sell numbered rubber ducks, release them into the water and award prizes for the first ducks across the line. A Colorado raffle license may be needed.
Sponsor a Buoy
Businesses sponsor each course buoy with a flag or banner. Paddlers round the sponsors on every lap.
Pirate Regatta Theme
Encourage paddlers to dress as pirates and decorate their boats. Award prizes for the best crew and best boat.
Sponsored Beach Zone
A sponsor hosts a shaded beach spot with water, sunscreen and a photo frame. It becomes the gathering place for families.
Kids Paddle Splash
Offer a short, roped kids course with life jackets and volunteers in the water. Every child gets a ribbon at the shore.
Captain's Cup Tradition
The winning crew takes home a cup, and the captain gets a ceremonial splash. Add a gag prize for the most dramatic fall.
