Every way to run a triathlon event
Colorado multisport races take place at reservoirs and lakes with open water swims or pool swims, from late May to September, for first-timers through experienced age groupers.
Sprint
About a 750 meter swim, 20 kilometer bike and 5 kilometer run. Racers start in waves, and overall and age group times decide winners.
Olympic
A 1.5 kilometer swim, 40 kilometer bike and 10 kilometer run. Racers start in waves by age, and total time includes both transitions.
Half / 70.3
A 1.2 mile swim, 56 mile bike and 13.1 mile run, totaling 70.3 miles. Plan long course support, aid stations and a cutoff time.
Full / 140.6
A 2.4 mile swim, 112 mile bike and 26.2 mile run. Racers often take all day, so plan cutoffs, many aid stations and night lighting.
Super Sprint
A very short race, often a pool swim, short bike and 1 to 2 mile run. Great for beginners and kids, and finish times rank divisions.
Duathlon (Run-Bike-Run)
Racers run, bike, then run again, with no swim. Good for cold water season, and total time including transitions decides winners.
Aquabike (Swim-Bike)
Racers swim then bike with no run, often alongside a triathlon. It suits athletes with joint issues, and total time ranks each division.
Relay / Team
Two or three people split the legs, handing off a timing chip in transition. Team total time ranks relays in their own division.
Clinic, camp or lessons
Coaches teach open water swimming, transitions, bike handling and pacing. Groups practice each leg, often finishing with a mock race.
Social or open play
Casual group swims, rides or brick workouts with no timing. Set a meeting spot and route, and pair new athletes with experienced ones.
Make it memorable
Fun triathlon event ideas
Side contests, fundraisers and traditions that people remember as much as the results.
Fastest Transition Award
Time each athlete from the moment they enter transition until they leave. The quickest change wins a prize and lots of cheers.
Relay Team Challenge
Teams of two or three split the swim, bike and run. It lets newcomers join, and the handoff moments are full of energy.
Sponsor a Leg
Businesses sponsor the swim, bike or run with signs and a cheer zone. Athletes see the support at every stage.
Pledge Per Finisher
Sponsors pledge a set amount for every athlete who crosses the finish. The total grows as each finisher comes in.
Superhero Costume Run
Invite athletes to wear capes or masks on the run leg only. A best costume prize makes the finish line photos stand out.
Sponsored Finish Chute
A sponsor brands the final stretch with flags, music and an announcer calling names. Their logo sits in every finish photo.
Kids Splash and Dash
Host a short swim and run for kids before the main race. Every young finisher gets a medal and their name called.
Last Finisher Celebration
Hold the finish line open and gather everyone to cheer the final athlete home. It is the moment people remember most.
