Every way to run a track & field event
Colorado amateur track and field includes community all-comers meets, youth club meets and masters competitions at high school and college tracks, mostly in spring and summer.
All-Comers Meet
An open meet where anyone can enter any event regardless of age or ability. Athletes are grouped into heats or flights, and times and marks are recorded.
Sprints / Middle Distance
Races from 100 meters to 1,600 meters run in heats on the track. Athletes are placed by time, often with finals for the fastest.
Distance / Road
Longer races like 3,000 meters, 5,000 meters, or road races. Runners start together and are ranked by finish time.
Relays
Teams of four each run one leg and pass a baton in a marked zone. The team's finish time decides placing.
Field Events
Throwing and jumping events like shot put, discus, long jump and high jump. Athletes get a set number of attempts, and the best mark wins.
Cross Country
Runners race across grass and dirt courses, usually 2 to 5 miles. Individuals are ranked by time, and team scores add top finishers' places.
Combined Events
Athletes compete in several events in one or two days, like a pentathlon or decathlon. Points from each event add up to a final score.
Clinic, camp or lessons
Coaches teach starts, running form, baton passing, jumping and throwing technique by event group.
Social or open play
An open track night where people run, jump and throw at their own pace with no results kept.
Make it memorable
Fun track & field event ideas
Side contests, fundraisers and traditions that people remember as much as the results.
Family Standing Long Jump
Parents, kids and athletes take turns at a standing long jump in the sand pit, with a chalk leaderboard. Easy, safe and fun for everyone.
Guess Your Sprint Time
Runners guess their own 100 meter time before racing, and the closest guess wins a prize. It lets anyone win, not just the fastest.
Pledge Per Lap Relay
Teams collect pledges for every lap they complete in a set time on the track. Schools and clubs love the friendly competition.
Sponsor a Lane
Businesses or families sponsor a lane with a sign and a shout out before each heat. Clear, affordable and easy to sell.
Decades Dress Up Relay
Relay teams run in outfits from a chosen decade, with a costume prize at the end. A crowd favorite to close out a meet.
Sponsor Finish Line Banner
A sponsor's banner hangs over the finish line so it shows up in every race photo. Add a sponsored medal ribbon for extra reach.
Kids Fun Run Lap
Young kids run one lap of the track, and every child gets a ribbon at the finish. Families stay for it and remember it.
Podium Photo Moment
Winners stand on a real podium with medals and a mountain backdrop for photos. Keep a yearly record board for meet records.
