Every way to run a swimming event
Colorado amateur swimming includes age-group and masters meets at rec center pools, plus summer open water swims and charity swims at reservoirs and lakes.
Pool Meet (Age-Group / Masters)
Swimmers enter events by stroke and distance, are seeded into heats by entry time, and race in lanes. Times rank swimmers within age and gender groups.
Open Water Swim
Swimmers race a buoy-marked course in a lake or reservoir, often in wave starts. Finish times decide placings, with kayak and boat safety on the water.
Distance / Charity Swim
Participants swim a set distance or as many laps as they can in a time window, often raising pledges per lap or mile.
Relay
Teams of four each swim one leg in turn, either the same stroke or one of each stroke in a medley. The team's total time decides placing.
Time Trial
Swimmers race alone or in small groups against the clock to set an official time, often to qualify for a later meet.
Timed Finals
Each event is swum once with no prelims, and the times from those heats decide the final placings.
Clinic, camp or lessons
Coaches work on stroke technique, starts, turns and breathing in small groups by ability, from learn to swim to masters.
Social or open play
A casual group swim or open lane session where people swim at their own pace with no timing.
Make it memorable
Fun swimming event ideas
Side contests, fundraisers and traditions that people remember as much as the results.
Underwater Distance Challenge
With lifeguards watching closely, swimmers see how far they can glide off the wall in one push. A short, safe test of form, not breath holding.
Relay Costume Swim
Relay teams swim one leg in a light shirt or silly hat, handing it off at the wall. Big laughs and strong spectator energy.
Pledge Per Lap Swim
Swimmers collect pledges for every lap they complete in a set time. A classic swim a thon that works for all ages.
Sponsor a Lane
Businesses or families sponsor a lane with a banner on the deck and their name read before each heat. Clear and easy to sell.
Under the Sea Theme
Deck decor, mermaid tails and fish themed caps turn a meet into an ocean party. Kids and parents both love dressing up.
Sponsor Towel Giveaway
A sponsor hands out branded towels or caps to every swimmer at check in. Families use them for years after.
Parent Splash Relay
Parents, coaches and grandparents race a fun relay, with kids cheering on the deck. A memorable highlight of any meet.
Rubber Duck Awards
Every winner gets a medal plus a rubber duck, and the best spirit swimmer wins a giant duck. Easy, cheap and perfect for photos.
