Every way to run a soccer event
Amateur soccer in Colorado ranges from youth tournaments to adult rec leagues, played on park and school fields spring through fall, with indoor arenas in winter.
5v5 / Small-Sided
Five or so players per side on a small field with small goals, often no goalkeeper. Short games, lots of touches, ideal for charity and youth events.
7v7
Seven per side including a goalkeeper on a mid-size field. Common for younger youth age groups and adult rec play.
11v11
Full-sided soccer with eleven per side on a full field, run with certified referees and standard rules. Typical for older youth and adult leagues.
Single Elimination
Teams play knockout games, and the loser is out. Ties are usually settled with penalty kicks so the bracket keeps moving.
Double Elimination
Teams move to a second bracket after a first loss and are eliminated after a second. Ensures every team plays at least two games.
Round Robin
Teams are grouped and play each team in the group. Points for wins and ties, then goal difference, decide standings.
League
Teams play a scheduled game each week over a season, earning points in a standings table that may lead to playoffs.
Clinic, camp or lessons
Coaches lead dribbling, passing and shooting drills grouped by age and skill, often ending with small scrimmages.
Social or open play
Pickup soccer where players show up, split into teams on site and play rotating games with no standings.
Make it memorable
Fun soccer event ideas
Side contests, fundraisers and traditions that people remember as much as the results.
Crossbar Challenge
Players shoot from the top of the box and try to hit the crossbar. Every ping gets a cheer and a small prize.
Juggling Contest
See who can keep the ball up the longest without letting it drop, with winners by age group. All you need is a ball and a counter.
Penalty Kick Buy-In
Pay a few dollars to take a penalty kick against a coach or local favorite in goal. Score and win a prize, miss and the cause still wins.
Pledge Per Goal
Donors pledge a set amount for every goal scored across the tournament. A running total on a big board keeps everyone watching.
International Colors Day
Each team picks a country and plays in its colors, with flags on the sideline. Best team spirit wins a prize at the final whistle.
Sponsored Kids Field
A sponsor hosts a small sided kids field with their own cones, pinnies and prizes. Families spend real time there between games.
Parents vs Kids Match
Close the day with a friendly match between parents and kids. The kids usually win, and everyone remembers it longer than the final.
Golden Boot Trophy
The top scorer gets an old cleat spray painted gold and mounted on a base. Cheap to make and the most photographed prize of the day.
