Every way to run a ski event
Amateur ski events in Colorado run December through April at resorts and Nordic centers, from charity fun races to club races for kids and adults.
When to run it: Colorado ski events run from about December through April. January brings the big freestyle contests to the mountains, so a fun race or rail jam nearby rides the excitement, and spring closing weekends are perfect for costume and charity races.
Giant Slalom
Racers run a course of wide turns through gates, one at a time against the clock. Best single time or combined two-run time wins.
Slalom
A shorter course with tight, quick turns through closely set gates. Racers go one at a time and the fastest time wins.
Dual / Parallel Slalom
Two racers run side by side on matching courses. Winners advance in head-to-head heats until a champion is crowned.
Fun Race (NASTAR)
A casual timed race on a simple course where racers are compared to a pacesetter's time with a handicap, so all ages and abilities can earn medals.
Cross-Country (Nordic)
Racers ski groomed Nordic trails in classic or skate style, with mass or interval starts. Fastest time over the distance wins.
Uphill / Skimo
Racers climb on skins up the mountain, sometimes with a descent, racing for the fastest time. Often run early morning before lifts open.
Rail Jam / Freestyle
Riders hit rails, boxes or jumps in a set area and judges score tricks on difficulty and style. Highest score wins.
Clinic, camp or lessons
Coaches run drills on turns, gate technique or terrain, grouping skiers by age and level, often over a day or a weekend.
Social or open play
A group ski day or meetup where people ride together, sometimes with a lunch or après gathering, with no timing.
Make it memorable
Fun ski event ideas
Side contests, fundraisers and traditions that people remember as much as the results.
Guess Your Time Race
Racers predict their run time on a gentle course, and the closest guess wins, not the fastest. Anyone can win, at any skill level.
Speed Trap Run
Time one short, wide-open section and post each skier's speed on a board. Fastest of the day in each age group wins a prize and bragging rights.
Vertical Feet Pledge
Supporters pledge per run or per thousand vertical feet each skier logs that day. Skiers push for one more lap to raise more.
Lift Ticket Raffle
Raffle off donated lift tickets, lessons and gear tune ups. Skiers buy tickets at the base. A Colorado raffle license may be needed.
Retro Neon Day
Everyone dresses in bright one piece suits and vintage gear from decades past. The best outfit wins a prize at the base area party.
Sponsored Cocoa Tent
A sponsor hosts a warming tent with hot cocoa and snacks at the base. Cold skiers love it, and the sponsor gets plenty of face time.
Kids Bunny Hill Race
Little skiers race a short, gentle course on the beginner slope. Every kid gets a medal, and parents line the finish to cheer.
Golden Boot Trophy
Winners receive an old ski boot spray painted gold. It is a fun photo moment and becomes a cherished tradition year after year.
