About 5Ks, Fun Runs and Charity Walks

6 coming up · 7 in the last 12 months

Lace up: this calendar lists upcoming run and walk events across Colorado. It covers charity 5K walks, holiday fun runs, 10Ks, half and full marathons, trail races, relays and costume runs, put on by nonprofits, schools, running clubs and race companies.

Race season builds in spring, peaks in summer and stays strong through the crisp fall months, while turkey trots, jingle bell runs and New Year’s Day races keep the winter calendar alive. Front Range races offer fast, flat options on paved paths, and mountain towns host scenic trail and road races at altitude. Most events welcome walkers, strollers and first-timers, and many raise money for local causes.

Every way to organize a running event

Colorado charity and community runs happen on park paths, neighborhood streets and mountain trails, mostly spring through fall, and welcome serious runners, walkers, families and strollers alike.

When to run it: Spring and fall are peak race season, and Thanksgiving turkey trots and New Year's runs are among the most popular. Summer races start early to beat the heat, and mountain races need altitude and weather plans.

5K

A 3.1 mile course, the most popular charity distance. Runners and walkers start together, and finish times rank overall and age group winners.

10K

A 6.2 mile course for runners who want more challenge. Times are recorded at the finish, and awards go to top overall and age group finishers.

Half Marathon

A 13.1 mile race that needs a certified or carefully measured course, water stations every couple of miles and a time limit for the course.

Marathon

A 26.2 mile race needing road closures, many aid stations, medical support and a course time limit. Finish times decide overall and age group results.

8K

A 5 mile road race, about 4.97 miles. It runs like a 5K with timed results and age group awards, just longer.

10 Mile

A 10 mile road or path race between a 10K and a half marathon. Plan several water stops and award by finish time and age group.

Trail Run

A race on dirt trails with hills and rough footing. Mark the course clearly with flags and sweepers, and rank runners by finish time.

Ultra (50K+)

Any race longer than a marathon, usually on trails. Organizers set aid stations, cutoff times at checkpoints and a crew plan, and finishing is the main goal.

Kids Run

Short distances like a quarter or half mile, sorted by age. Every child usually gets a ribbon or medal, and timing is often optional.

Virtual Run

Participants run the distance on their own route during a set window, then submit their time or a photo. Medals and shirts are mailed out.

Fun Run / 1-Mile

A short, untimed or lightly timed mile for families and walkers. It is about participation, often with costumes, color or a theme.

Relay

Teams split a long distance into legs, with each runner passing a baton or wristband at exchange zones. The team's total time decides the winner.

Clinic, camp or lessons

A coach leads group sessions on pacing, form, breathing and training plans, often building toward a goal race over several weeks.

Social or open play

A casual group run at a set time and place, with no timing or results. Runners go at their own pace, often meeting after for food.

Make it memorable

Fun running event ideas

Side contests, fundraisers and traditions that people remember as much as the results.

Fastest Last Mile Award

A timing mat at the final mile crowns whoever runs the quickest closing stretch, not just the overall winner. Back of pack runners can chase it too.

Guess Your Finish Time

Runners predict their finish time with no watch, and the closest guess wins a prize. It levels the field so walkers can win.

Mile Marker Sponsorships

Families and businesses sponsor a mile marker sign with a name, photo or tribute message. Runners read them along the way and it funds the cause.

Pledge Per Mile Teams

Teams collect pledges for every mile walked or run, with a bonus for the biggest team. Great for workplaces, schools and church groups.

Costume Corral Start

A themed wave lets runners start in costumes, capes or tutus, with a costume contest at the finish. Holiday and superhero themes draw the biggest crowds.

Sponsor Cheer Station

A sponsor runs a cheer zone with music, signs and water or orange slices. The loudest station wins a shout out at awards.

Kids Dash Finale

A short kids dash runs while adults cool down, and every child gets a medal at a real finish line. Families stay longer and come back next year.

Finish Line Photo Arch

A balloon arch or mountain backdrop at the finish gives every runner a free photo. Add a special medal design that changes each year to build a collection.
