Every way to run a rodeo event
Colorado amateur and youth rodeos are held at county fairgrounds and private arenas from late spring through fall, often tied to county fairs and charity fundraisers.
When to run it: January is rodeo season on the Front Range, with the big stock show in Denver drawing crowds every year. Ride that interest with a youth rodeo day or a mutton busting night, and book indoor arenas early.
Rodeo (All-Around)
Contestants enter several events, and points or winnings across events decide the all-around champion. Organizers run events in a set order.
Barrel Racing
A rider and horse race a cloverleaf pattern around three barrels. Fastest time wins, with a time penalty for each knocked barrel.
Team Roping
Two riders work together, one roping the head and one the heels of a steer. Fastest time wins, with penalties for missed or partial catches.
Bull Riding
Riders try to stay on a bucking bull for eight seconds with one hand. Judges score rider and bull, and the highest score wins.
Gymkhana / Playday
Fun timed horseback games like poles, keyhole and flags, often for youth and beginners. Riders are grouped by age, and fastest times win.
Saddle Bronc / Bareback
Riders stay on a bucking horse for eight seconds, with or without a saddle. Judges score rider form and horse effort.
Tie-Down Roping
A rider ropes a calf, dismounts and ties three legs together. Fastest time wins, with penalties for breaking the barrier.
Clinic, camp or lessons
Experienced riders and ropers teach horsemanship, roping and event technique. Groups are small, and safety gear is required.
Social or open play
Open arena nights or practice sessions where riders work their horses or try events. No official scoring.
Make it memorable
Fun rodeo event ideas
Side contests, fundraisers and traditions that people remember as much as the results.
Mutton Busting
Young kids ride sheep for a few seconds, wearing helmets and vests, with handlers close by. It is the crowd favorite every time.
Calf Scramble
Kids chase calves to pull a ribbon from their tails, with handlers and clear rules. Winners get a prize and lots of cheers.
Sponsor a Chute
Businesses sponsor each bucking chute with a banner. Every ride from that chute gets a shout out.
Buckle Raffle
Raffle a custom belt buckle or western gear package, with winners drawn at intermission. A Colorado raffle license may be needed.
Western Wear Day
Spectators and riders dress in their best boots and hats. Award the best dressed family at intermission.
Sponsored Barrel Race
A sponsor backs a special barrel racing round with a prize for the fastest time. Their name is on the banner and the buckle.
Meet the Animals
Families visit a petting area with calm animals and handlers. It is a gentle way to learn about rodeo life.
Safety and Thank You
Open with a safety talk and a thank you to medics, bullfighters and volunteers. End with a group photo of all riders.
