Every way to run a rock climbing event
Climbing competitions in Colorado are mostly gym-hosted bouldering and rope comps held year round, plus outdoor events at crags in spring and fall.
Bouldering Comp
Climbers try short, rope-free problems over pads during a set window, scoring points for each send. The highest total wins.
Redpoint Comp
Climbers attempt as many routes as they can in a set time, counting their best few sends. Highest total score wins.
Top Rope Comp
Climbers attempt routes with the rope already anchored above, scoring by route difficulty or height reached.
Lead / Sport
Climbers clip the rope into bolts as they go. The highest point reached on a hard route decides placement.
Speed Climbing
Climbers race up a standard route on top rope against the clock, often head to head. Fastest time wins.
Dyno Comp
Climbers leap from start holds to a far hold, which is moved farther each round. The longest successful jump wins.
Outdoor Comp
Climbers attempt real rock routes or boulders over a day, logging sends on scorecards. Highest total score wins.
Clinic, camp or lessons
Instructors teach movement, belaying, knots or outdoor safety, grouped by experience.
Social or open play
A casual climbing meetup where people climb together with no scoring.
Make it memorable
Fun rock climbing event ideas
Side contests, fundraisers and traditions that people remember as much as the results.
Speed Route Race
Climbers race up a top rope route while the clock runs, with winners by age group. It is fast, exciting and easy to follow.
Dyno Jump Contest
Climbers leap for the farthest hold on a bouldering wall over thick pads. Each big jump gets a roar from the crowd.
Climb-a-thon Pledges
Supporters pledge a set amount for every route or foot a climber completes. Climbers push for one more route to raise more.
Gear Raffle
Raffle off donated shoes, harnesses, chalk bags and memberships. Climbers buy tickets all day. A Colorado raffle license may be needed.
Costume Climb
Climbers wear costumes on easy routes for a fun session. It is great to watch, and the best costume wins a prize.
Sponsor a Route
A sponsor names a newly set route for the event. Climbers see the name on the wall, and the route stays up for weeks.
Kids Bouldering Zone
Kids climb low problems with stamp cards for each one they finish. A full card earns a prize, and parents get great photos.
Summit Bell Ring
Hang a bell at the top of a featured route for climbers to ring when they finish. Every ring gets a cheer and a photo.
