Every way to run a hockey event
Colorado amateur hockey runs at indoor community rinks year round, with outdoor pond tournaments on frozen lakes in January and February, for youth, adult rec and charity teams.
When to run it: Rink time is tight from September through March, so book ice early. Outdoor pond hockey on frozen lakes and rinks peaks in January and February and is a favorite for charity tournaments.
3v3
Three skaters plus a goalie per side play cross-ice or on a small sheet, often with running time and rolling line changes. Fast and good for small rosters.
5v5 (Full Ice)
Standard full ice games with five skaters and a goalie, usually in three timed periods. Book referees, timekeepers and scorekeepers for every game.
4v4
Four skaters and a goalie per side on full or half ice. More open space means more scoring, and it works well with shorter rosters.
Pond Hockey
Outdoor games on natural ice, usually 4v4 with no goalies and small low nets. Teams play short games, and players self-officiate or have light reffing.
Roller / Ball Hockey
Played on a rink floor or sport court with inline skates or sneakers and a ball or puck. Run it like ice hockey with shorter games.
Round Robin + Playoffs
Teams play several group games, earning points for wins and ties. Top teams by points move to playoff games to decide the champion.
Tournament Bracket
Teams play an elimination bracket where winners advance each round. Plan overtime or shootout rules so tied games finish on time.
League
Teams play weekly scheduled games over a season, often at late evening ice times. Standings track wins and points, with playoffs at the end.
Clinic, camp or lessons
Coaches run skating, stickhandling and shooting stations, then scrimmage. Group skaters by age and level, and require full gear.
Social or open play
Stick and puck or pickup sessions where skaters split into even teams. No standings, just casual play with basic rules.
Make it memorable
Fun hockey event ideas
Side contests, fundraisers and traditions that people remember as much as the results.
Shootout Showdown
Players donate to take a penalty shot on a volunteer goalie, with prizes for every goal. The crowd counts down each attempt.
Fastest Skater Lap
Time skaters on one full lap of the rink between games. Post the times on a board and crown the fastest skater of the day.
Chuck a Puck Toss
Fans buy numbered foam pucks to toss on the ice at intermission, and closest to center wins. A Colorado raffle license may be needed.
Sponsor a Goal
Businesses pledge a set amount for every goal scored across the tournament. The total climbs on a scoreboard all day.
Retro Jersey Night
Teams play in vintage jerseys or homemade throwback designs. Auction the best jerseys after the final game to raise more.
Sponsored Intermission Game
A sponsor hosts an intermission contest, like a shooting game or a drawing for a ride on the ice resurfacer. Their name is part of the show.
Kids Skate With the Players
After the last game, families join the players for an open skate. Helmets are required for kids, and it is the moment families remember.
Handshake Line Tradition
Every game ends with the classic handshake line. Add a hard hat award for the hardest working player, chosen by teammates.
