Every way to run a cycling event

Colorado charity and amateur rides run on mountain passes, foothill roads, gravel county roads and trail systems, mostly from May through September, drawing everyone from casual riders to local racers.

Charity Ride / Fondo

A noncompetitive group ride with several route lengths and aid stations. Riders raise or donate money, ride at their own pace, and everyone who finishes is celebrated.

Gran Fondo

A long mass-start ride, often 80 to 100 miles, with timed climbs or an overall time. Riders choose shorter options, and results are listed by age group.

Road Race

A mass-start race on open or closed roads over one long loop or several laps. Riders race by category, and first across the line wins.

Criterium

A fast race on a short closed loop, usually under a mile, for a set time plus laps. Riders race by category, and some laps award bonus sprint prizes.

Time Trial

Riders start alone at set intervals, often 30 or 60 seconds apart, and race the clock. The fastest time in each category wins.

Gravel

A mass-start ride or race on dirt and gravel roads, often with several distances. Riders carry some of their own supplies, and finish times rank each age group.

Mountain Bike

A race on singletrack trail loops, often cross-country laps or downhill runs. Riders start in waves by category and age, and the fastest total time wins.

Clinic, camp or lessons

Coaches teach skills like climbing, cornering, group riding or bike repair. Riders are grouped by ability, and sessions mix instruction with practice rides.

Social or open play

A casual group ride with no timing, often ending at a brewery or park. Set a route and pace, use ride leaders, and keep a no-drop policy.

Make it memorable

Fun cycling event ideas

Side contests, fundraisers and traditions that people remember as much as the results.

Mountain Climb Crown

Time one steep climb on the route and crown the fastest riders. A polka dot jersey or sash for the winners makes for great photos.

Slow Bike Race

Riders race to finish last on a short lane without putting a foot down. It looks easy, is surprisingly hard, and has spectators laughing.

Sponsor a Mile

Local businesses or families sponsor each mile of the route with a sign at the roadside. Riders see the support, and sponsors get real visibility.

Pledge Per Mile Ride

Riders collect pledges for every mile they complete, from a short family loop to a full century. Everyone can join at their own level.

Costume Cruiser Parade

Before the main ride, invite riders to decorate bikes and dress up for a slow parade lap. Prizes go to the most creative bike and rider.

Sponsored Aid Station

A sponsor hosts a themed rest stop with snacks, music and a photo spot. Riders remember the best stop and talk about it for years.

Kids Balance Bike Race

Set up a short, coned course for little riders on balance bikes or training wheels. Families cheer every finisher and kids get a ribbon.

Lanterne Rouge Award

Honor the last finisher with a red lantern trophy and a big cheer at the finish. It celebrates grit and makes everyone feel welcome.
