Basketball keeps going all year here. Winter belongs to school seasons and adult indoor leagues, spring and summer are peak months for club tournaments and camps, and outdoor 3 on 3 events show up at festivals and parks when the weather is warm. Large tournaments often spread games across several gyms, so check locations and schedules closely when you plan travel.

Clinic, camp or lessons

Instruction rather than competition. A clinic is a short group session on one skill; a camp runs several days; lessons can be private or small group. Most are grouped by age or skill level.

Every way to run a basketball event

Rec and charity basketball in Colorado happens year round in school and community center gyms, with outdoor 3v3 events on park courts and blocked-off streets in summer, for youth and adult teams.

3v3

Teams of three or four play half court to 21 points or a time limit, with ones and twos scoring. Games are fast, so many teams fit on few courts.

5v5

Standard full court games with five players a side, usually in timed halves. Plan a scorekeeper and referees for every court and game.

Single Elimination

Teams play a bracket and one loss ends their day. Winners move on each round until one team takes the title.

Double Elimination

Teams stay alive until their second loss. Losers move to a second bracket, and its winner meets the main bracket winner in the final.

Round Robin

Every team in a group plays every other team once. Rank by wins, then point differential, to name a winner or seed playoffs.

Pool Play → Bracket

Teams play a few pool games to guarantee court time, then pool finishes set seeds for an elimination bracket that decides the champion.

League

Teams play a weekly game over several weeks, often eight to ten, with standings tracked all season and playoffs at the end.

Clinic, camp or lessons

Coaches run drills on shooting, ball handling and defense, then small-sided games. Group players by age and skill to keep it fun.

Social or open play

Drop-in pickup games where players are mixed into teams on arrival. Winners stay on or teams rotate, with no standings.

Make it memorable

Fun basketball event ideas

Side contests, fundraisers and traditions that people remember as much as the results.

Half Court Shot Contest

Players donate for a chance at a half court shot, with a prize for anyone who makes it. The crowd goes wild for every attempt.

Hot Shot Challenge

Players have 60 seconds to score from marked spots worth different points. Quick rounds between games keep the gym loud and busy.

Free Throw Pledges

Players collect pledges for every free throw they make in a set number of tries. It is simple, and every player can take part.

Buy a Bucket Raffle

Fans drop tickets in buckets beside the prizes they want, with winners drawn at halftime of the final. A Colorado raffle license may be needed.

Throwback Jersey Day

Teams show up in retro jerseys, short shorts and tall socks. A best throwback look prize adds color to every team photo.

Sponsored Timeout Contest

A sponsor runs a quick fan contest during timeouts, like a layup race or shooting game. Their name is on the prize and the announcement.

Kids Dribble Parade

At halftime, kids dribble a lap of the court while the crowd cheers. Each child gets a high-five line from the players.

Net Cutting Ceremony

The champions climb a ladder to cut down the net, one strand per player. It is a classic moment and the photo everyone wants.
