Venue Overview
Moorhead Recreation Center is a City of Aurora recreation center in northwest Aurora, close to the Denver line, I-70 and the Anschutz Medical Campus area. Its strongest draw is the building itself: a 38,600-square-foot center with a full-sized gymnasium that holds three basketball cross courts under a running track, an indoor natatorium with a lap pool, a leisure pool and a 163-foot corkscrew water slide, plus a fitness center and a community teaching kitchen. When it opened in 2017 it was the first new recreation center Aurora had built in 40 years, and today it serves basketball drop-in, swimming, fitness and youth programs year-round.

History
The original Moorhead Recreation Center was a 4,500-square-foot drop-in center that had served the neighborhood for about 40 years. The city replaced it with today’s 38,600-square-foot building, designed by Barker Rinker Seacat Architecture and built by Pinkard Construction, which held its grand opening on June 29, 2017. A bid that came in under budget let the city build a new facility instead of only renovating the old one, and it was Aurora’s first new recreation center in four decades.
Basketball Courts and Gym Play in Aurora
The gym is laid out as one full-sized court that splits into three cross courts, so it can run a full game, three half-court games or a youth practice at once. The city lists sports drop-in play in the gym, led by basketball, and the running track above keeps walkers and runners off the floor. Courts can also be booked through the city’s recreation rentals for leagues, practices and tournaments.
