Venue Overview

Devil's Thumb Golf Course is a public, 18-hole golf course in Delta, Colorado, set at the base of the Grand Mesa with panoramic views of the mountains surrounding the Uncompahgre Valley. Designed by Rick Phelps of Phelps Golf Design and opened in July 2001, this prairie-style links course plays to a par of 72 across up to 7,176 yards, with a course rating of 72.6 and a slope of 126, and has been ranked among the top courses on Colorado's Western Slope for over a decade.

About the Course

Devil's Thumb traces its roots to the nine-hole Cottonwood Golf Course, which the city of Delta began exploring for expansion in the late 1980s. In 1998, the city selected Rick Phelps as lead architect, with Niebur Golf brought on as the course builder. Construction began in the spring of 2000, the course was seeded in 2001, and Devil's Thumb held its grand opening on July 21, 2001. Nestled into a swath of adobe hills, the prairie-style layout winds through 60 bunkers and two lakes, with bluegrass tees and fairways, bentgrass greens, and fine fescue accents around the bunkers and rough. Wild antelope roaming the property add to a setting golfers frequently describe as one of the most scenic on the Western Slope.

A Consistent Western Slope Award-Winner

Few Western Slope courses can match Devil's Thumb's award history. The course finished second in Golf Digest's Best New Affordable Public Course rankings for 2002, and has been named among Colorado Avid Golfer's top-ranked Western Slope courses nearly every year since, including the #1 Ranked Golf Course on the Western Slope in 2021. Golfweek has separately recognized it among its Best Courses to Play multiple times through the 2010s, and golfmilehigh.com ranked it the #7 Public Course in Colorado in 2023. That sustained recognition, stretching back more than two decades, has made Devil's Thumb a genuine source of pride for the Delta golf community.

Apply for Event Management

Event Management Application (2027)
CUP manages 10 sporting events per season, and that is the cap.
Applications for the 2027 season are reviewed starting October 1, 2026. Returning clients confirm their dates first, then remaining slots go to new clients. This is an application, not a booking, and it takes about 6 minutes.

Your organization

Who is hosting, and how we reach you.

Beneficiary

Only if the event raises money for a cause.

Your sporting event

The basics we need to judge fit.

Out-of-state note: our standard pricing covers events held in Colorado. Events outside Colorado are quoted individually with travel and on-site costs included.
Worth knowing before you submit: our fully-managed service starts at 100 people on site. Below that the economics do not work for either of us, so this is likely not a fit. You can still apply, and you can always list your sporting event on the CUP calendar instead.
This one gets a custom quote. Our standard service model covers single-day events with 100 to 160 people on site, including vendors. Larger fields and multi-day events still work, we just scope them and send a custom quote instead of a standard price.

What success looks like

So we can tell you straight whether we are the right team.

Budget and timing

Fully-managed service is a real line item. Straight answers save us both time.

A CUP engagement runs roughly 150 to 200 hours of planning, design, marketing and coordination, handled by one team from the first call to the final award. Applications need a real budget line for professional management, separate from venue, food and prizes.
Worth knowing before you submit: a fully-managed engagement sits above this range, so this is likely not a fit for 2027. You are welcome to apply anyway. If self-serve is the better move right now, you can list your sporting event and add promotion here: list your event.

Then we will be in touch.
