Venue Overview
Hiwan Golf Club is a historic private golf and country club in Evergreen, Colorado, tucked into the foothills of the Rocky Mountains about 25 miles west of Denver. Founded in 1962 and graced with more than 55 years of tradition, Hiwan is where the Colorado Open was born, a Press Maxwell mountain course that hosted the championship for 27 years. Set at 7,665 feet among ponderosa pines and Douglas firs with Bergen Peak framing nearly every hole, it pairs storied golf with a full family lifestyle of tennis, fitness, and dining. And as one of the area's premier settings for golf tournaments, weddings, and business conferences, Hiwan is as memorable for events as it is for members.About the Course
Hiwan's championship golf course is an 18-hole, par-70 mountain layout designed by J. Press Maxwell and opened in 1962, with later course work by architect Dick Phelps. Playing to about 7,000 yards at an elevation of 7,665 feet, it winds through towering ponderosa pines and Douglas firs beneath Bergen Peak, with mountainous terrain and famously difficult greens that reward local knowledge. As a private club, play is reserved for members and their guests. Course features: 18-hole, par-70 mountain course designed by J. Press Maxwell About 7,000 yards, with a course rating of 72.8 and a slope of 143 Opened in 1962, with later course work by Dick Phelps Set at 7,665 feet, higher than Zermatt, Switzerland Fairways lined with ponderosa pines and Douglas firs, framed by Bergen Peak Notoriously difficult greens with significant elevation change A signature par-3 12th, with waterfalls and three sculpted bunkers A large practice facility with a driving rangeA Course With History
Few clubs in Colorado carry the championship heritage of Hiwan. Founded in 1962, the club launched the Colorado Open in 1964 and proudly hosted the state's premier tournament for 27 years, until 1991, welcoming most of the biggest names in golf along the way. Hiwan also hosted the USGA Girls Junior in 1965 and the USGA Junior Amateur in 1976, cementing its place in the state's golf history. Perched at 7,665 feet, nearly half a mile higher than Zermatt, Switzerland, it has offered generations of members emerald fairways, stunning mountain vistas, and a rich tradition that few clubs can match. The Playing Experience
Hiwan is mountain golf with genuine bite. J. Press Maxwell routed the course through stands of ponderosa pine and Douglas fir, so nearly every hole is framed by trees and the backdrop of Bergen Peak, and the mountainous terrain serves up plenty of uneven lies. The greens are the real test, full of subtle and not-so-subtle elevation changes, steep drops, and tricky reads that can humble even low handicaps. Water adds drama at the 450-yard par-4 7th, guarded by a large pond, and at the picturesque par-3 12th, where a series of waterfalls and three sculpted bunkers make it the signature hole. At 7,665 feet the ball flies far, and it is not unusual to share the course with elk, or, on rare occasions, a moose. Storied and scenic, it is a course that rewards return visits.Beyond Golf: Tennis, Fitness & Club Life
Hiwan is a full family lifestyle club, with plenty to enjoy beyond the fairways: Tennis and an active racquet community Sports and fitness operations Dining and social gatherings that amplify the mountain lifestyle A four-season property, with the course serving as a cross-country ski venue in winterGolf Lessons & Instruction
