History
The Durango Community Recreation Center opened in 2002. Visits fell to about 144,000 in 2020 during the pandemic, then climbed back to 366,000 in 2024, close to the 2019 level of 374,000. With demand high, the city budgeted a new recreation master plan for 2026 that is weighing options including a building addition or a separate field house.
Swim Meets and Pool Programs
The competition pool makes the center the base for competitive swimming in southwest Colorado. The Durango Swim Club trains here and hosts its Halloween Spooktacular meet each October, and the club’s Jolean Scott Memorial meet is set for April 2027. A Masters Swimming program also trains in the pool, sharing the building with open lap swim and the family leisure pool.
